Classroom News:
This week we practiced our first lock down/evacuation drill. We will have another drill on September 13. Please take some time to discuss with your children that drills are just practice so we can learn how to be safe at school. Remind them it is important that they are quiet and listen to the school staff during a drill so they can learn how to be safe. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about our drills.
Our class took their first online NWEA Reading test on August 31. Everyone did a great job and showed a lot of respect for each other during the test by being quiet and reading books quietly after they completed their test while they waited for their peers to finish. I am really proud of all of them! We plan to take our online NWEA Math test on September 5. Makeup tests will be given to children who need them due to absents. I will attach a copy of your child's NWEA test results to his/er progress report on September 14. If you would like to meet with me to discuss your child's results after I have sent progress reports home please email me to schedule a meeting on a Monday or Thursday. I am always happy to meet with you.
The children also did a great job taking their first graded spelling test! As a reminder please give your child a pretest using the Bright Bear spelling word list at home prior to studying any list. If your child gets all the words right then have him/her study the Busy Bee spelling list for the week. If your child misses some words on the pretest please have your child study the Bright Bear spelling list. Please help your child remember the list he/she is studying for homework or send in the completed pretest on the first school day of the week in your child's responsibility folder. This will help to ensure your child is completing the correct word work centers in class and takes the correct spelling test on Fridays. Again if you have any questions please let me know.
Please look for a bright blue field trip form in your child's responsibility folder on Tuesday September 4. Please finish filling it out, sign it in a couple of places for your child and return to school by September 18. We may take four fingerprinted parent chaperones on this trip. If you are interested in volunteering please go to the volunteer opportunities page on this site and click on the link there to sign up. I have also added guided reading volunteer opportunities through November.
Look what we are learning in first grade!
Word Work/Spelling: -ck & Short i (-ick, -ink, ill, it) spelling pattern, two 100% spelling words: for, from (these words will be expected to be spelled correctly in all our writing for the entire school year once we introduce and practice them). Be sure to give your child a pretest at home using the Bright Bear spelling list prior to studying the words. If your child get a 100% on the pretest you give them please have him/her study the Busy Bee spelling list other wise have him/her study the Bright Bear spelling list.
